Streaming from YouTube (with the Android TV app) works very well on all our Android TV boxes. 4K HD is fully supported.

YouTube Icon

YouTube is a popular video-sharing platform that offers a wide variety of user-generated videos. There are video clips, TV show clips, music videos, short and documentary films, audio recordings, movie trailers, live streams, video blogging, short original videos, and educational videos (source: Wikipedia).

Streaming from YouTube works very well on all our Android TV boxes. 4K HD is fully supported. However, you must use the correct app. The regular YouTube app used on smartphones and tablets (com.google.android.youtube) is designed for touchscreen devices. It does not work well with the TV box remote control. Instead, you will need to use the YouTube for Android TV app (com.google.android.youtube.tv).

Pros

  • TV-friendly user interface.
  • Supports 4K HD.
  • Supports voice search.

Cons

  • Ads (from YouTube).

Setup

You won’t be able to install the YouTube for Android TV app directly from the Google Play Store. That’s because a TV box is typically not certified as an Android TV. Fortunately, our TV box has the app preinstalled. Furthermore, you can update it to a newer version using our complimentary SOFTPAQ.

Restricted Mode

If you have young children in the family, you may want to consider turning on the Restricted Mode under Settings (as shown below). That way, videos flagged as 18+ will not show.
